first glimpse of a suspected mass murderer, james holmes. the man suspected of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others in a packed movie theater on friday appeared in court today, with bright red hair and dramatic facial expressions, he looked like he was out of it at times. he looked blankly up and down and staring into space at times. and it looked like a man who was out of it. and for the first time, we're hearing about this neuroscience student. we're about to hear his voice for the first time. we did not hear him in court. this is holmes speaking at a science camp in san diego from 2006. he's 18 years old in this video obtained by abc news. and here he talks about a shared interest with a mentor. >> he also studied subjective experience, which is what take place inside the mind as opposed to the external world. i'm carrying on his work in dealing with subjective experience. >> and in jail a just-released inmate told "the new york daily news" he saw holmes spitting at guards and at the door of the cell. tonight he's in suicide watch and in solitary confinement. and we heard from

slept a lot. paint us a picture for what it was like to get a glimpse of holmes today. >> reporter: it was tough, i would imagine, for the many people who were intently watching this. he appeared as some sort of comic book character emerging in that courtroom. but i think after everyone got over the shock of seeing the red hair, the attention really turned to his demeanor. and i think people were just stunned by his complete dazed look, bewilderment at times, confused. he appeared sedated and completely out of it in many ways. it's led to a lot of speculation throughout the day that he might have been medically sedated by authorities here in the jail in arapahoe county. we've reached out to the sheriff's office in charge of that jail. they say they cannot tell us whether or not he's been medically sedated or given anything. the speculation will have to continue. i think many people were stunned by that. all of this is significant. since he was arrested in the early morning hours of friday, the authorities here in colorado had refused to release his mug shot. this was the first time tha

50 more. according to police, this man, 24-year-old james eagan holmes purchased a ticket for the 12:05 movie. he then walked into the theater and right back out the exit door, leaving it propped open. after getting dressed in riot gear, he burst back through that door, set off canister of tear gas and opened fire. holmes was a phd candidate at the neuroscience program at the university of colorado. prior to today holmes's only brush with law, a speeding ticket. now to ho the events unfolded inside that theater. the chaos erupted. the first calls to 911 at 12:39 a.m. local time. >> there's saying somebody is shooting in the auditorium. there is at least one person that's been shot but they're saying there's just hundreds of people running around. >> within 90 seconds police were on the scene. >> seven down. seven down. >> get me some officers in nine so we can get the moveable victims out. >> according to scanner traffic, holmes was spotted around 12:45, he was arrested shortly thereafter in the parking lot behind the theater, still wearing the vest, helmet and gas mask. four weapons

, because lawyers for holmes are asking authorities to hand over a package that holmes had sent to his psychiatrist. this package was discovered in the university's medical campus mailroom on monday. and it included a letter that contained references to shooting people and drawings of a gunman and his victims. according to cbs news. we now know the package was addressed to dr. lynne fenton, the director of student mental health at the university of colorado. a resume posted on the university's website says fenton sees between 15 to 20 graduate students each week for medication and psychotherapy. she also serves as a psychiatrist, seeing between 5 and 10 patients according, again, to that resume. in a court filing, holmes public defender said, quote, the materials contained in that package include communications from mr. holmes to dr. fenton that mr. holmes asserts are privileged. mr. holmes was a psychiatric patient of dr. fenton and his communications with her are protected. relating to james holmes. this comes on the heels of some news reports that holmes sent a package to the medical campus. don lemon is "outfront" in aurora. good evening, don. >> good evening. what they're saying, what the judge is saying in this order is that he is trying to preserve the integrity of this case. the d.a. filed a motion regarding public access to the university of colorado records. in light of the package that was supposedly delivered to the mailroom. so the judge came back today and said yes it was okay. the university does not and shall not, it says, which means they shall not give any information regarding this investigation. that of course as always includes any grades or e-mail that has to do with this investigation. that is usually under -- it's called the c.o.r.a., which is colorado's records act. and you can file what we call a f.o.a., freedom of information, and get that. in this case, it's not going to happen. until the judge says it's okay to release that. >> a funeral today for one of the shooting victims. what can you tell us about that? >> mikaela medek.

university of colorado confirms they discovered a suspicious package sent from james holmes in a mailroom in their medical campus on monday. it was addressed to one of holmes' former professors. the package reportedly includes writings and drawings about killing people.
